How to Evaluate a Tax Preparer Fee Quote

How to compare tax-preparation fees by scope, complexity, review, planning, and year-round support instead of price alone.

A tax-preparation quote is meaningful only if you understand what is included. Two professionals can quote very different prices because they are offering very different scopes of work.

Ask what returns and schedules are included

Confirm whether the quote covers federal, state, local, business, trust, amended, or extension filings.

Ask what review is included

Is there a second-level review, planning review, or only basic preparation?

Ask about questions during the year

Some firms include brief consultations; others bill separately or offer advisory packages.

Ask about notices and amendments

Do not assume representation, notice responses, or amended returns are included in a preparation fee.

Compare value, not just price

A lower fee can be appropriate for a simple compliance relationship. A higher fee may reflect deeper review, expertise, planning, or access. Compare the service you actually need.
