Practice Focus: Why Your Tax Professional’s Actual Practice Matters

A tax professional’s credential tells you something important. It does not tell you what they actually do all day.

The 30-Second Answer

Ask what percentage of the practice is tax, what returns are prepared most often, what kinds of clients are served, and how often the professional handles situations like yours.

Credential and Practice Focus Are Different

Two CPAs can have completely different day-to-day practices. Two EAs can also focus on very different areas. Practice focus connects the credential to the work you actually need.

Repetition Builds Pattern Recognition

A professional who repeatedly handles S corporations, partnerships, fiduciary returns, retirement planning, real-estate issues, or IRS controversy is more likely to recognize recurring issues and missing facts quickly.

Ask About Frequency

Do not stop at “Have you ever handled this?” Ask “How often do you handle this?” The difference between one case five years ago and dozens of current cases can matter.

A Good Professional Knows Their Limits

One of the strongest signs of professionalism is the willingness to say that a matter is outside the normal practice area and bring in someone with deeper expertise.
