Tax Preparer Fees: What Is Included—and What Is Not?

How to compare tax-preparation fees by scope, not just price, including planning, bookkeeping cleanup, amendments, notices, and year-round advice.

The lowest quoted fee may or may not be the lowest total cost. Compare what the engagement includes.

Preparation scope

Does the quote cover federal and state returns? Business returns? Rental schedules? K-1s? Local filings? Electronic filing? Extensions?

Cleanup and reconstruction

Bookkeeping cleanup, basis reconstruction, depreciation corrections, or missing-record work may require additional time and fees.

Planning

Do not assume planning is included with tax preparation. Ask whether projections, strategy meetings, and written recommendations are separate engagements.

Amended returns and notices

Ask whether corrections, IRS notices, state notices, and representation are included or separately billed.

Year-round communication

Some firms include routine questions; others bill for consultations. Understand the model before comparing hourly or flat fees.

Value is not the same as price

For a simple return, price may be a major factor. For a complex business or planning relationship, relevant competence and timely advice may matter far more than saving a few hundred dollars on preparation.
