Two equally competent tax professionals can offer very different relationships. The best fit depends on what you expect beyond the tax return itself.
Annual compliance or year-round advice?
Some clients want accurate preparation once a year. Others need quarterly projections, business decision support, estimated-tax updates, or planning before transactions. Neither model is automatically better—but the mismatch can be frustrating.
Who communicates with you?
Will you speak with the credentialed professional, a manager, or a client-service team? Understand the communication path before you need an urgent answer.
How fast is “responsive”?
Ask about expected response times in tax season and outside it. Availability often changes dramatically during filing deadlines.
How is technology used?
Secure portals, electronic signatures, video meetings, and digital workflows can make geography far less important. Technology should improve security and access, not make the relationship impersonal.
What is included in the fee?
Scope determines value. A higher fee that includes planning and year-round access may be less expensive than a lower preparation fee plus separate charges for every conversation.
