Choosing a Tax Pro

How Are Tax Questions Handled During the Year?

What to ask about year-round access, response time, consultation fees, planning, and who answers when tax season is over.

A tax question often matters most before a decision is made. If you expect year-round advice, make sure the relationship is designed to provide it.

Ask who monitors questions outside filing season

Some firms reduce staff or hours after April. Others operate year-round. Ask who receives messages and whether your primary professional remains available.

Ask what response time to expect

“We are available” is vague. Ask whether routine questions are usually answered in one day, several days, or by scheduled appointment.

Ask whether consultations are included

Some engagements include a defined amount of year-round advice; others bill separately. Either model can work if expectations are clear.

Ask what qualifies as planning

A quick answer to a question is different from modeling several scenarios. If you need ongoing planning, make sure it is explicitly part of the relationship.
